A digest for conscious living
The Practice continues.
At a certain point, I think there is a leap of faith to be made. The point when one goes from being a Seeker to being a Finder. This by no means that the journey is over, but rather that it has truly begun. Finding is as endless as Seeking, but it has a different quality. There is something missing when I am seeking, and there is a satisfying mountain of work atop which lies what is sought. Finding is the continuous process of completion which renews itself every moment- and it is effortless. I think this is a key point- what does it mean if something is effortless? It means there is no resistance, there is no burden.
So often we think that living life right means living life responsibly. Living responsibly, holding ourselves accountable for our actions, is typically equated with caring about our world. Because compassion is a form of carring for everything and everyone, spiritually minded people in particular seem to often think that it is our “responsibility” to save the world- often by saving ourselves. This idea is not only misguided, but it is also responsible for laying the heavy burden on us which relegates most people to being eternal Seekers rather than Finders.
The crux of this issue lies in the fact that only our ego can bear responsibility. Our true nature knows no such ball and chain. The Buddha within all of us does not make decisions, he has realizations. Its like asking someone what their favorite color is. If pressed, most people will give an answer based on some psychological or emotional connection with a particular color- there is no rational explanation for it. There are dozens of colors to “chose” from, but when we analyze the true motive for picking one favorite, we become aware that there was no real choice involved, no decision. Rather it is a realization, a discovery of which color resonates most strongly with our own nature.
Fundametally, all the perceived “choices” that we make are a permutation of the same process. If we look deeply into ourselves, we realize that the entity making a “decision” at any given time had no say in the election of its genetics, parents, culture, education, or social conditioning- yet these are all factors that will determine the outcome of any deliberation. These are the factors that make up our ego identity, but they have little to do with our true nature.
In order to become a Finder we must relinquish responsibility, for it is this responsibility which binds is to our ego nature. Instead we must use every fork in the cosmic road as a tool to allow ourselves to further discover our infite True nature. We must trust that we have already been provided with the wisdom necessary to live properly.
From our ego perspective, it is counterintuitive to think that we can be free from our responsibilities. There is a part of us that insists that we will suffer the consequnces for any negative choices we make and we must therefore chose carefully what we do. If however we give ourselves completely to the Truth of who we are, and accept this truth completely, everything action will arise spontaneously out of a deeper wisdom and harmony. If we are faithful to our True Nature there will be no wrong choices, because there will be no choices at all… only realizations leading us deeper and deeper down the infinite path of completion.
