Often I see people trying to make the world a better place by taking vigorous action to change a situation. This is good and necessary, but I believe that in order to effect true and permanent change for the better, ultimately a different solution is necessary.
There is a collective consciousness which is literally creating our universe in every instant. Everything and every one in the universe is a reflection of this collective and a co-creator of it at the same time. On the dualistic, physical level, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If one moves left, there is now further space to move in the direction of the right. Within this paradigm, any energy exerted to achieve a particular end, will generate its opposite in equal measure. One can see this in any political system, in any social movement, and ultimately within oneself.
The only way to truly change this is to change the paradigm. To change the subconscious mind of the Dreamer in such a way that the Karmic wheel stops spinning. I believe it is possible to walk that Razor’s edge- maintaining the balance of all elements in one’s life so as to bring harmony into one’s world. This process is not easy and it can only be done on an individual basis, but the effect it has can not be underestimated. By changing one’s consciousness one is effectively changing the Dreamer’s consciousness in the most powerful way I know.
“I wonder if the are twenty men alive in the world now who see things as they really are. That would mean that there were twenty men who were free, who were not dominated or even influenced by any attachment to any created thing or to their own selves or to any gift of God, even to the highest, the most supernaturally pure of His graces. I don’t believe there are twenty such men alive in the world. But there must be one or two. They are the ones who are holding everything together and keeping the universe from falling apart.” -Thomas Merton
